Leucorrhoea is an excessive vaginal discharge which is sticky, foul smelling and white or yellowish in color. Leucorrhoea mainly occur in women due to estrogen imbalance. Genital tract infection, low immunity and unhygienic condition are responsible for an excessive discharge of leucorrhoea
There are 3 types of leucorrhoea
Physiologic leucorrhoea:
It occur due to high level of estrogen hormone. It is not serious condition but should resolved early as possible. Generally pregnant women have physiologic leucorrhoea because, high estrogen in their body cause more blood flow to vagina leads to leucorrhoea. Female infants sometime may have leucorrhea after birth due to, in uterine exposure to estrogen
Bacterial leucorrhoea:
It may cause due to inflammation of vaginal mucosa. If it is yellow in color or have foul smell, then consultation from doctor is must because it could be a sign of several disease process, it may be due to STD or due to an organic bacterial infection.
Parasitic leucorrhoea:
It is caused by Trichomonus vaginalis, the symptoms of parasitic leucorrhoea is burning and itching at the vagina. Discharge type is thick, yellow or white frothy substance.
Symptoms of leucorrhoea:
- Foul smelling vaginal discharge
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Pain in stomach
- Constipation
Causes of leucorrhoea:
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Lack of cleanliness or poor hygienic measures
- Contraceptive use causes irritation
- Injuries to the vagina, womb or cervix, which is very common during pregnancy
- Uses of jellies, sprays and lubricants
- Infection from the bacteria, fungi or other parasites
- Urinary tract infection
- Low immunity
