Hand foot mouth disease is mostly common in children below the age of 10 years. The disease spread from person to person. Infection is more common at child health care center, preschool, school, playground, where children are in quarters. Oral ingestion is the most common way to spread disease in small children, as the children put many times hand in their mouth. The illness spread from infected patient’s:
- saliva
- Respiratory droplets, which are spread in the air after coughing and sneezing
- Stools
- Fluid from the blisters
- Nasal or throat secretions
Symptoms:
Early symptoms includes fever along with soreness of throat. Painful blisters are present inside the mouth and in some cases around or outside the mouth too. Blisters after few days converts into ulcers. Blisters generally occurs on hand and feet area. Sometime blisters occurs on buttocks, legs and genital area too. Theses blisters are similar to chickenpox but, they are smaller in diameter. Blisters are not itchy like chicken pox but are sore to touch. There is also a loss of appetite.
The incubation period of the HFD is from 3-5 days. This means it takes 3-5 days to actually appear symptoms after infecting by virus. The virus mostly spread by air, after coughing and sneezing by infected person. It also spread by touching the fluid of the blisters. Many times it can spread through stool (faeces), as small children sometimes don’t wash their hands so well. The disease is mainly infectious until the spots and mouth ulcers have gone.
Complications:
The main complication of HFD is dehydration. Children have sore ulcers and blisters in their mouth during HFD. So they avoid drinking liquid as it causes the sore pain in mouth. Hence keeping your child hydrated is the main important thing.
